What’s Another Billion Dollars To A Politician?

I think you’ll enjoy this post at Woodsterman, which was linked at Adrienne’s Corner. I thank her.

This is too true to be funny. The next time you hear a politician use the
word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the ‘politicians’ spending
YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
But one advertising agency did a good job of
putting that figure into some perspective in
one of its releases.

A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.

A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

A billion dollars ago was only
8 hours and 20 minutes,
at the rate our government
is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain…
let’s take a look at New Orleans…
It’s amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator,
Mary Landrieu (D)
was asking Congress for
To rebuild New Orleans.   Interesting number…
What does it mean?

Well .. If you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans
(every man, woman and child)
You each get $516,528

Or… If you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.

Or… If you are a family of four…
Your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington, D.C.

Are all your calculators broken??

We had absolutely no national debt…
We had the largest middle class in the world…
And Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What happened?
Can you spell

And I still have to
Press ‘1’  for English.

I hope this goes around   the
At least 100 times

What the hell has happened to our    country?????

Fair enough! Politicians are a sorry lot. But what does that say about the American electorate? The congressional approval rating is sitting at 13.5% and the American electorate keeps sending the same bastards back time and time again. On the whole, the American electorate are idiots and the politicians depend on them being idiots.
Well, that;s what I’m I’m thinking. What are your thoughts?

  1. This reminds me of a quote often attributed to Sen. Everett Dirksen, Republican Senate Minority Leader in the 1960s.

“A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money.”

    1. Interestingly, we’re now talking about budgets in the trillions, so all of those $3 apiece billions become $3,000 apiece (per trillion). And, that is every man, woman, and child. Assume the children aren’t paying, and all the people who aren’t working aren’t paying, and for each one of those, another $3,000 (per trillion) is added to the tab of those who are working. Heck, I bet even the $3 per billion adds up when you subtract those who aren’t paying it from the total number of people.

      1. Per capita, actually, it’s quite manageable. We just have to be grown-ups about it and stop running around like Chicken Little crying “The Debt Clock is falling! The Debt Clock is falling!” Doing grown-up things like paying for war machines and wars, paying bills instead of accumulating debts, etc. In other words – being responsible. Maybe someday you righties will grow up and realize that.

  2. Jim, I’m getting increasingly convinced that people aren’t so much idiots as they are economically ignorant and unable to comprehend consequences. Most people who are Dems are not raving leftists (progressives… neo-Marxists). They just think they’re being nice. People need help! They don’t do the math on the amounts. They just want to help. They don’t think about the consequences of programs like welfare in terms of destroying the family or disincentivizing work, they just see people who need help. Raising the minimum wage seems like a good idea if you don’t understand that making a price higher (the price of the employee) makes people buy less (hire less) of the product (the worker). That’s how Dems can get away with saying they want to increase the price of gasoline so people will use less of it, while at the same time saying they want to raise the minimum wage and it won’t have an effect on employment.

I had a conversation with my sister (who is an extremely nice person, but knows jack about economics and is a Dem) regarding the cost of college tuition. She told me that Obama is trying to help, and when I responded that Obama’s policy of easy loans is actually the thing that is raising tuitions and contributing to administrative bloat at Universities, she looked at me like I was nuts. The guy (Obama) just wants more people to get an education! She couldn’t grasp that when universities see an endless stream of easy money coming their way they see no reason to compete on price, and in fact have every incentive to raise tuition. She’s not an idiot, she just doesn’t have any clue about economics or incentives and she wants to be nice, she wants to help. Obama keeps saying he’s helping… he must be helping, right?

Dems do an incredibly good job manipulating language (the names of their bills are just precious) and people’s desire to be nice. They lull people into thinking that government can help and that there are never any adverse consequences resulting from their desire to do good deeds. They are con men. As your article points out, they’ve now made a billion dollars seem like it’s nothing. They can toss around that amount and make it seem like chump change. Except, of course, if an individual has a billion dollars (and is not a Dem)… Then that is way too much for anyone to have.
