On Tuesday of this week, Zero Hedge posted what I think you will find to be a very interesting article. The author references an earlier post he had done about a secret meeting between Saudi’s influential intelligence chief, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, and Putin. supposedly, in this “secret” meeting, Bandar lavished gifts on Putin and offered a multi-billion dollar arms deal on the condition that Russia give up its alliance with Syria’s al-Assad and also give up its plans to control Syria’s all important natgas transit infrastructure. Putin reportedly laughed of the Saudi proposal. Now the author is revisiting that “secret” meeting because the secret is out by way of leaks from Russian media picked up and reported by As-Safir (translated here).
Before continuing with what was said in the meeting of Bandar and Putin, I should point out that there is no end to “conspiracy” theories that US foreign policy in the Middle East and the reason the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq lasted so long all has to do with very lucrative oil and mostly gas pipeline projects. These theories are often refered to as the Pipeline Wars. What are not theories, however, are the proposed pipeline projects themselves. They are very real. They all have acronyms, in which the letters stand for the names of the countries through which the pipelines would travel. TAPI, for example, stands for Turkministan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India. This is a project supposedly favored by our government. Southern Pakistan, a hot bed of radical Islamists, is key to all projects that have India as the ultimate customer. But, it is Syria that is the key to several pipeline projects that would move the precious energy source to Europe. Now, in an ideal world, no one country would try to grab control of these critical pipeline routes. But, we don’t live in an ideal world, do we? And, what did Prince Bnadar mean about Putin giving up control over Syria’s natural gas transit infrastucture? Well, if this source is correct, Putin is making a grab at controlling the flow of natural gas througfh Syria:
President Bashar al-Assad inked a secret deal that gives Russia the license to control natural gas resources in Syria, according to informed Middle Eastern security officials. The officials said Assad last month agreed to sign the document, considered an understanding of principals on control of his country’s gas resources, including transiting pipelines, in exchange for continued Russian support in resisting the insurgency against his regime. The officials further said Russia helped to broker a separate understanding with Assad that would allow public and private Chinese companies to rebuild damaged infrastructure in Syria if Assad defeats the insurgency.
Okay, back to the Zero Hedge story and the not so secret meeting between Saudi’s Prince Bandar and Mr. Putin. The story run by As-Safir has Bandar being very candid about the Saudi’s anti-Muslim Brotherhood position and he told Putin that the Saudi government has warned the governments of Qatar and Turkey that their support for the Muslim Brotherhood is a big mistake. And, Putin was equally candid about Russia’s relationships with Iran and Turkey. As regards Turkey, Putin says he is not happy with Turkey’s support for the rebel groups in Syria. And, although Russia still sees Turkey as a friend, Putin warned his friend, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, :
Turkey will not be immune to Syria’s bloodbath. The Turks ought to be more eager to find a political settlement to the Syrian crisis. We are certain that the political settlement in Syria is inevitable, and therefore they ought to reduce the extent of damage.
But, it was after Putin’s rebuff of Bandar’s proposal that Bandar tried his hand at hardball. This quote attributed to Prince Bandar should set off some alarms in you head:
“… As an example, I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics in the city of Sochi on the Black Sea next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us, and they will not move in the Syrian territory’s direction without coordinating with us. These groups do not scare us. We use them in the face of the Syrian regime but they will have no role or influence in Syria’s political future.”
Really? The Chechen Islamists are controlled by the Saudis? They don’t move without coordinating with the Saudis? I wonder if our amateur in the White House thought to ask his Saudi King what the Saudis knew about the two Chechen Islamist brothers who set off bombs at the Boston Marathon? I rather doubt it. Puppets rarely question their puppet masters. And, poor little Barry __ he has so many puppet masters pulling him in different directions all at the same time. What is a poor puppet to do? It’s probably best that he go on another vacation or play a few more rounds of golf and let the puppet master, Valerie Jarrett make all of the decisions.
Well, that’s what I’m thinking. What are your thoughts?
If you are planning to attend the Winter Olympic Games in Russia, you may want to think twice about that.
